Ashtanga Practitioner Development with Janet Hawkins

Patanjali's suggestions for living a better life through yoga is an eightfold path. In this four module series for students of traditional method Ashtanga Yoga, we will investigate five of the limbs and their application to practice. Each module will focus on a different limb and provide opportunity for investigation through discussion and exercises, Mysore-style practice and review. All levels of interested practitioners are welcome to attend. Please feel comfortable to bring questions to investigate.

Cost: $90/module, register online here.

February 25, 1-4pm– Breathwork
Breathing is a common factor amongst all living creatures. Pranayama, the restraint of prana or breath, is the fourth limb and essential in learning Ashtanga Yoga. Though there are thousands of different pranayama techniques, during the practice we use ujjayi pranayama to purify the body and calm the mind. In this module we will review technique for ujjayi pranayama, the mysterious bandhas and introduce basic pranayama practices as a method of developing awareness and control of the breath.

March 24, 1-4pm– Concentration
Learn how to bring your mind into true focus through the development of dharana, the sixth limb of Ashtanga Yoga. In practice we use gazing points, or dristi, to draw the mind inward and promote concentration and awareness into the movement we are performing. This opportunity to observe what is happening inside ourselves is an essential part of developing union of thought and action, changing our practice from a series of movements into a meditative and graceful session of self-observation.

April 14, 1-4pm– Backbends and Closing
Practice without causing harm. Be connected to your truth and contentment while showing discipline and awareness for yourself and those around you. Now do it upside down and backwards! Integrating first two limbs, yama and niyama into our practice will help grow awareness in the mind, body and spirit, but how do we do that when the postures get really hard?

Janet Hawkins is a dedicated Ashtangi with thirteen years of experience in yoga and over thirty years experience in sport, movement and teaching. She competed in high-performance diving nationally and internationally for nearly ten years. The intense training and competing regimen left her broken and nearly confined to a wheelchair due to injuries. Yoga gave Janet tools to heal life's bruises and move out of pain. It is with this mindset of the healing power of yoga that she serves her students to find their way to health.

Teaching for eleven years in the Ashtanga method under the study of Nancy Gilgoff, Janet has developed a sensitivity to energetic flow and impediment. Her approach to yoga is rooted in helping students out of pain and suffering through energetic alignment, breathwork and postural integrity.

Janet is committed to the path of yoga and is grateful for the love and lessons of her teachers Nancy Gilgoff, Guruji & Sharath.

Critical Alignment Therapy

Please note: These sessions will take place at #195, 7330 Fisher St. SE

Basically it is a logical and highly effective way of working with any back/shoulder/hip pain, injury, or poor movement pattern. An excellent option for repetitive strain injuries, lower back injuries, postural (i.e. 'sitting at a desk') pain, and as a way to increase your sports performance.

Critical Alignment Therapy is a process that through initial passive (moving towards active) exercises begins to release the tension and strain (caused by injury or stress) that we hold in our surface, movement muscles. Once this begins to release the movement can then travel through into our centre line (mainly being our spine) where the postural muscles can be activated once again bringing ease and lightness into our practice, our movements, and our lives.

These sessions begin the first week with one on one 15 minute assessments of your movement patterns in relation to your spine and your injuries/habits. From there it is a 7 week series of classes designed around the 8 students that are in each class. This is a very effective therapy when it comes to dealing with any injuries, repetitive strain pain, poor postural habits, and more!

NEW! The level II C.A.T. class on Saturdays at 9am is offered to students who have completed at least one full C.A.T. session. This 9am session will forego the initial assessment and be a series of 8 full classes.
